Included in this archive are some new help files for use with STadel 3.1a.
The general philosopy behind this set of help files is to present options
by functional grouping. I have found that this is the best way to avoid
confusion among new users. Generally, the .HLP files contain a description
of what the commands are all about, the .MNU files a complete listing of all
options available with a brief comment for each option. MAINOPT.MNU and
DOHELP.HLP are intentionally formatted for 40 columns, as most new users
will be reading these before they log in, and the default before login is
40 columns. I tried to keep the frequently referenced help files as succinct
as possible, to avoid overwhelming the user with many screens full of info.
I removed references to AIDE help and functions from the general help
files, as most users have no need for them. I also removed almost all
references to [W]C-protocol to avoid further clouding the already confusing
file transfer commands. USAGE.HLP has been added (it contains most of the
info from the original DOHELP.HLP) so that the DOHELP.HLP can be as brief as
possible.
On Phase Computing, I also used help files for ordering information
(as it was a mail-order BBS) and for information on the programming languages
for which Phase Computing offered support. Any number of other help files
could be added for information purposes, it is often easier for new users
to find help files than to attempt downloading text files from directory
rooms.
Don't try to go overboard providing new users with help. You can never
have enough help files for the more obtuse users, and even if you have more
than enough, they invariably ignore it, or are unable to find it.
The following help files need to be edited as shown, if you don't want
your BBS looking like a Phase clone...
BANNER.BLB create your own* logon banner!
DENY.BLB if you're running a closed system, change this one to tell
. the prospective user how to ask for access
DOHELP.HLP change Phasebase> to the name of your base room, and edit the
blurb about entering/reading messages to suit your config.
FILES.HLP edit the blurbs at the top and the bottom.
FORGET.HLP change Phasebase> to the name of your base room.
GOTO.HLP ditto.
HELPOPT.HLP change the BBS name at the top, and add whatever help files
strike your fancy...
HOURS.HLP edit to reflect your BBS hours.
LOGINOUT.HLP change "Phase" to your BBS name, and edit the bit about entering
messages to reflect your configuration.
MAIL.HLP edit the bit about entering messages to reflect your config.
NOCHAT.BLB edit to suit your fancy
POLICY.HLP edit to reflect your BBS policies
NOTICE.BLB put your bulletin here
I hope you find these useful. Since STadel is such a unique BBS for the
ST, it is truly the help files that will make or break a new user's first
impression of an STadel BBS. I have incorporated many suggestions from new
users (new to STadel) into these help files, feel free to do the same with
your users. They know what they're getting confused about; you already
know the software!
